J Bay is a small town with a relaxed, safe and laid back atmosphere, It does not require much planning and has good weather year round. To make things easier for you, we have made a simple J Bay travel guide to answer some questions that most ask or want to know before booking a trip.
What is the best time of the year to come?
This question depends on who you ask, but for us the best time of the year is between February and June. This is a time when the season starts to change, the weather is amazing but slightly cooler after the hot summer. All the crowds have left town and its mostly locals around. The winter swells start to arrive and the aloes start to bloom.
Since Jeffreys Bay is also a summer vacation destination for South Africans, it's extremely busy in December and getting around or booking accommodation can be difficult.
How do I get around when I'm there?
As mentioned, Jeffreys Bay is a small town but it's big enough to need some wheels to get around. The good thing is there is no heavy traffic, highways and stressful driving. You can either rent a car, use a taxi service or rent a scooter.
Our recommended option is to rent a scooter. The reason being its cheap, user friendly and a fun way to experience J Bay. You can add on a board rack for your surfboard to head down to the beach or add on a carry box to have some free space for shopping. Cruise around Jeffreys bay Bali style and see more of the town this way.
Where Should I Stay?
There are many different options on accommodation in Jeffreys Bay, from 5 star guest houses to dorm rooms at backpackers and everything in between.
The surf stoke cottage offers a combination of privacy, sea views and comfort on a budget. Centrally located you're just a short drive or walk from the best surf breaks, beaches and shops. Wake up with the sunrise and enjoy views of the whole bay with free on site parking, a open plan living area, fully equipped kitchen and much more. This is a homely space with the bonus of staying with a local surfer and tour operator to make the most of your stay.
What should I pack?
It's always recommended to travel lightly, however we suggest packing swimwear, warm layers,a hat, camera, binoculars, waterproof cellphone case, sunblock and a set of windproof pants and jacket so that you are well prepared.
If you're a surfer you'll need a 4.3mm wetsuit in winter and a 3.2mm wetsuit in summer. We do not recommend traveling with surfboards because it's a hassle, they get damaged and it will cost just as much as buying a board here. There are many shops that sell wetsuits and surfboards and you can get some good deals!
