Things to do in J Bay
The question we are most asked is “what is there to do in J Bay besides surfing?”
Jeffreys Bay is famous for world class surfing, and for good reason. Supertubes is the best right hand point break in the world, yearly hosting the world surf league and the best surfers on the globe.
This being said, our small town also offers much more than just good waves, whether you're looking for adventure, wildlife, sightseeing, ocean based activities or just the slow paced lifestyle. Jeffreys Bay is a great base on the Garden route for anyone.
Surfing
Although Jeffreys Bay is known for big, perfect waves there are many different beaches and waves to be had for all levels of surfers. From beach breaks to more gentle sand bottom waves and obviously perfect point breaks.
You can go on a day trip from Jeffreys bay to Cape St Francis which is only a 30 minute drive. This coastline has many different surf breaks and is a great way to spend the day, find out all the ins and outs and surf with an experienced local at the best break of the day.
If you're more on the beginner side of things you can book a private surf lesson with a wetsuit and surfboard rental included and improve your surfing skills and ocean awareness.
Fishing and whale watching at St Francis Bay
What many doesn´t know is that Jeffreys Bay was once a small fishing town before the surfers came to town. Tt's a big part of the local culture and has sustained the local economy in a massive way.
You can wake up at sunrise and head out on the ocean, searching for marine life and fishing with a local born and raised in J Bay. View the local squid fishing boats and ask questions, keep your catch of the day and prepare a lovely meal for yourself, family or friends.
Safari at Addo Elephant National park
Many people visit Jeffreys Bay on route to Addo Elephant Park, and for good reason. Addo Elephant park has the highest density of African Elephants in the world and is also home to the traditional big 5 and lots of other wildlife.
The wildlife here is practically untouched and the park offers many facilities to make use of. You can spend the day exploring Addo Elephant park and enjoy a south african style braai at jacks picnic site for lunch. Searching for lions, elephants, buffalo and other wildlife throughout on a full day safari adventure.
Hiking at Storms river national park
As mentioned J Bay is a great base, it's just over an hour away from Addo elephant national park, but also only an hours drive from Storms river mouth national park.
You can spend the day exploring the nature reserve, it has breathtaking scenery to view, suspension bridges to walk across and many enjoyable hikes. One of our favorite hikes is the waterfall hike.
Follow the spectacular coastline, hiking through indigenous forest, viewing caves and walking along the ocean to a beautiful waterfall that comes down right next to the ocean, swim, snorkel, picnic and much more.
Kayaking at the Gamtoos river
There are many saltwater rivers in and around Jeffreys Bay. The most spectacular one being the Gamtoos River. At the Gamtoos river you can expect amazing sunsets, mountain views and birdlife. What better way to experience that than from a kayak paddling up the river.
You can also relax at the river side resort which has view points, a swimming pool, under roof fire place and camp sites.
